The most celebrated athlete in Appalachian State University’s history isn’t flashy, or loud. He shies away from video cameras, flash bulbs and eager reporters, and in press conferences, he lets his more outspoken teammates do most of the talking. When he does respond to questions, his voice is hushed, and the words come forward at his own relaxed pace.

“I’m really just not the type that wants all the attention right now,” said Armanti Edwards, the junior quarterback of the ASU Mountaineer football team. “I just like to be in the shadows, basically.” Read More »

Let the Rivalries Begin—ASU Meets Georgia Southern in Statesboro Saturday

Talk about some fierce competition. In the next three weeks, ASU football will meet its toughest competitors in the Southern Conference. Two of them are ranked in the Top 25 in The Sports Network national FCS poll, and all three are ranked in that field in the Coaches Poll. More importantly, all three teams—Georgia Southern, Furman and Wofford—are either tied or only one win behind ASU in the SoCon standings.

And don’t forget about Elon. The Phoenix, who are sitting comfortably atop the SoCon ranks with a 4-0 record and are currently ranked third in the nation by The Sports Network, come to Boone on Saturday, November 15. Read More »

ASU Football has already seen its ups and downs this season, but this Saturday, October 4, is when it really starts to matter. The Mountaineers open up conference play at Kidd Brewer Stadium in the Homecoming Game versus The Citadel at 3:00 p.m. ASU is the only team among the nine Southern Conference squads that has not played a conference opponent yet this year. No matter how much anyone tries to say that last year’s ASU football defeat of James Madison in the first round of the playoffs is in the past, it’s clearly not. The fact that ASU squeaked by with that victory—sealed by a JMU turnover—in the final minute of the game left a bad taste in the mouths of Dukes fans, and this Saturday, September 20, they host the Mountaineers in their territory.
